About the partner:
AZTERLAN is a research and technology centre specialising in metallurgy, metallic materials and metal transformation technologies. It supports industrial companies through applied research, innovation projects, advanced testing and expert consultancy.
Combining metallurgical expertise with advanced facilities, AZTERLAN helps manufacturers improve the quality, performance and sustainability of their products and production processes. Its work supports more resource-efficient manufacturing and helps companies put research into practice.
Role in BRISA:
Alternative sand moulding materials to minimise hazardous emissions in foundries.
AZTERLAN leads BRISA’s foundry case study, validating materials and operational technologies that aim to make sand casting safer, cleaner and more sustainable.
Drawing on its expertise in sand moulding and casting, it develops alternative moulding sands and bio-based binders in line with SSbD principles. These solutions aim to reduce the hazards associated with moulding materials, lower emissions of crystalline silica and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and improve energy and resource efficiency. AZTERLAN also assesses whether the materials and processes are suitable for industrial adoption.
